A Reading from the Book of Concord 1 year series June 2, 2011 - The Ascension of Our Lord
The following reading from the CONCORDIA edition of the Book of Concord is for the Gospel, Mark 16:14-20 for the The Ascension of Our Lord, June 2, 2011.
It is from Small Catechism, Part III, Third Article.
Jesus's Ascension to "the right hand of God" was not about leaving His people behind. It was about departing from sight to fill the whole world while remaining hidden in it amidst His holy Christian Church. There He has sent His Holy Spirit to work amongst baptized believers and keep them with Him through the means of grace in the Communion of Saints for the forgiveness of sins even unto the end of the age.
THE THIRD ARTICLE Sanctification I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? Answer: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise up me and all the dead and will give eternal life to me and to all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.
