A Reading from the Book of Concord 1 year series February 23, 2014 - Sexagesima
The following reading from the CONCORDIA edition of the Book of Concord is for the Gospel, Luke 8:4-15 for the Sexagesima, February 23, 2014.
It is from Augsburg Confession, Article V.
Jesus' parable of the sower and the seed speaks of the Office of the Holy Ministry. God sows the seeds of faith, that is His Holy Word, through the ministers He sends out into the world. In the parable, Jesus shows how those things that attack and thwart the seed that is the Word of God, are actually seeking to end life itself—along with all the future fruit that life would otherwise produce.
1] That we may obtain this faith, the Ministry of Teaching the Gospel and administering the Sacraments was instituted. For through the Word and Sacraments, as through instruments, 2] the Holy Ghost is given, who works faith; where and when it pleases God, in them that hear 3] the Gospel, to wit, that God, not for our own merits, but for Christ's sake, justifies those who believe that they are received into grace for Christ's sake.
4] They condemn the Anabaptists and others who think that the Holy Ghost comes to men without the external Word, through their own preparations and works.
